A Collingwood Park skilling project is one of 23 across the state to share in more than $500,000 under the Palaszczuk Government’s Social Enterprise Development Grants.
Challenge Employment and Training will support 60 people in retail, business, horticulture and conservation training as part of a new project to develop a retail nursery and café at its 200-acre Westfalen facility.
Member for Bundamba Lance McCallum said the local project would be backed by the $8 million Social Enterprise Jobs Fund.
“We’re investing in our not-for-profits to help them purchase new equipment and resources and provide new opportunities for our youth, people with disabilities and mature-age jobseekers,” Mr McCallum said.
“Locally that means supporting Challenge as it engages with other organisations, groups and businesses to bring its new retail nursery social enterprise to life.
“The project will also provide our local community with access to affordable plants and more information about sustainable gardening.
“Challenge has a proud history and proven track record of success, helping thousands of people gain new skills and find work.
“The team also teaches important work and life skills, ensuring a holistic experience and long-term benefits for participants.
“Along with this local project, we’ve also supported social enterprises in the communities of Cairns, Cook, Lytton, Mackay, Maryborough, McConnel, Nudgee, Pine Rivers, Springwood, Stafford and Stretton.”
