Local primary schools can score a visit from league legend Johnathan Thurston as part of a new Get Ready Queensland competition launched this week.
The competition encourages activities that help students learn more about natural disasters and preparedness.
Bundamba MP Lance McCallum said the Get Ready website included resources like worksheets, games and online challenges for local students to complete.
“We know kids can be our biggest advocates for change in their household,” Mr McCallum said.
“Learning at school and bringing that knowledge back home benefits the entire family unit, so we’re looking to educate our kids while also empowering them at the same time.
“Extreme weather is unfortunately a part of life in Queensland – we go through more natural disasters than another other Australian state – and being prepared is all about caring for yourself, your loved ones and your property.
“The Get Ready Queensland initiative has been helping people prepare for natural disasters since 2013, and during that time we’ve seen the number of people with an emergency plan increase from 18 per cent to 57 per cent.”
Schools can enter the Get Ready competition by taking photos of students completing the activities and submitting them online before Thursday, 7 October.
