The Redbank Plains Junior Rugby League Club is on a bear hunt for the NRL’s ultimate prize.
Member for Bundamba Lance McCallum said the club would welcome the code’s iconic Provan-Summons grand final trophy to Ipswich at 11am today, 22 September.
“Playing in a first grade premiership team and vying for the Provan-Summons trophy is the dream of most junior bears playing at our local club,” Mr McCallum said.
“This is one of the fastest growing clubs in Ipswich and it’s set to give the trophy a warm welcome to South-East Queensland’s league heartland.
“Ipswich has always been a rugby league nursery, and the Bears under-19 Colts claimed their own grand final trophy over the weekend with a 40-20 win over the Norths Tigers.”
Mr McCallum said the trophy tour of regional Queensland was history in the making.
“Hosting the NRL’s finals series and then the grand final at Suncorp Stadium on 3 October is a first for Queensland,” Mr McCallum said.
“The trophy has put every Queensland region it has visited in the spotlight, which is great for local clubs and fans.
“It will visit the Gold Coast on Thursday ahead of Friday’s arrival in Brisbane for this weekend’s preliminary finals and next week’s grand final celebrations.”
